Vitamin D is a fat-soluble vitamin that promotes a stronger immune system, helps regulate insulin and blood sugar, is crucial to fetal bone mineralization, and may have a role in decreasing the risk of multiple sclerosis, diabetes, and autism. Vitamin D levels cross into the placenta and appear in baby's blood at the same concentration as in its mother. It is important to know your level prior to taking a supplement.
Higher levels of Vitamin D can lower the risk of pregnancy–induced hypertension and can reduce the risk of asthma in a child. Studies show that the rate of cesarean section deliveries is found to be inversely related to vitamin D status.
The Midwives of New jersey recommend routine screening of Vitamin D3 levels in pregnant women in their practice. When levels are below normal, the Midwives recommend supplementation with 5,000IU D3/day in the prevention of cesarean birth.
“…controlling for race, age, education level, insurance status, and alcohol use, women with 25(OH)D less than 37.5 nmol/liter were almost 4 times as likely to have a cesarean than women with 25(OH)D 37.5 nmol/liter or greater” https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC2681281/
